Formative testing is especially effective for finding and fixing active usability issues. This technique is employed in many phases of the user research cycle to resolve usability issues as a product evolves. One specific application comes during the prototyping phase where low fidelity interactive wireframes are tested to validate design decisions early in the process. Representative user tasks are selected, and participants are observed attempting to complete said tasks to provide a holistic view of how users interact with a product.
